EARTH observation technologies have recently gained a key role in the fields of environmental monitoring and disaster prevention.In the past,the technological solutions operating mostly at large scale (i.e.,observation from spacecrafts or aircrafts) have allowed the discovery of many long-term environmental phenomena or modifications,depending on a huge number of physical parameters both at large- and small-scales.However,because of the complexity of the monitored systems,the understanding of such phenomena could not be achieved by means of classical earth observation technologies.As a consequence,researchers have been pushed in the development of innovative and integrated earth observation strategies,able to detect in a real-time fashion the spatial and temporal variability of the parameters of interest in the physical environment under test.Thanks to the distributed sensing and intelligence,these novel technologies are able to improve the knowledge of environmental phenomena and validate complex Earth System Models (ESMs).In a near future,the pervasiveness of such systems will certainly provide the scientist with global instruments suitable for the observation of climate changes as well as for the implementation of early warning systems against disasters
