如果would have liked to do 是本想做什么而没做,那么第一句怎么解释?
另外加个问题.

为什么they were brought down a peg or two不用过去完成时?不是有虚拟吗?

　　含内心想法意思的动词用 would have done 格式,表示一种过去的虚拟意愿,意思是“本来当时是如何想的,但是事实上却不是如此”.因此,第一句的含义是“我原本希望看到她被杀掉了威风,事实上却不是我所希望看到的用这种方法”.第二句的的含义是“我当时原本希望已经了解了你,但事实上我了解你的程度却不是我希望的那样”.

 

　　这类动词也可以用 had done 格式表示与现在有关的虚拟意愿.例如：

 

We had hoped to hold the garden party this weekend, but we reckoned without the weather! 我们原想在本周末举行游园会,但忽略了天气的因素!

The Cause they had thought could never fall had fallen forever. 那个主义她们原来认为是决不会失败的,现在永远失败了.

　　 “it is time + 从句”表示的一种个人想法,按理说后面的从句要求用虚拟语气（对现在虚拟用过去时,对过去虚拟用过去完成时）.你举出的这个例句不知来自哪里,如果出自权威词典,也让我长了见识,但是我还是认为你的意见是对的,应该用 We thought it was time they (had been brought) down a peg or two.
