Chavez forces popular Venezuelan TV station off the air
By Michael Vasquez
MIAMI _ Critics of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez _ including Venezuelan citizens who have relocated to Miami _ are expecting to end their Sunday observing a most unwelcome milestone in that Latin American country's history:the removal of one of its most popular television stations from the broadcast airwaves.
At midnight,Radio Caracas Television _ Venezuela's most widely watched network _ is scheduled to cease,a death prompted by the Chavez government's decision not to renew its broadcasting license.
The Miami-based Independent Venezuelan American Citizens organization held a news conference Friday to call attention to the station's anticipated closing and denounce the government's action.
IVAC President Ernesto Ackerman said the station closure will make it harder for average folks in Venezuela to know what their government is really doing.
"They were telling the truth to people, and it was free TV," Ackerman said."They had very popular programs."
But Chavez says RCTV and other opposition-aligned private media supported a failed 2002 coup against him.The channel has also been accused of violating broadcast laws and showing programs with violence and sexual content that are morally degrading.
Chavez critics, however, say the controversial leader is motivated simply by a desire to shut down voices critical of his regime.
Those critics aren't limited to Venezuelans within the country or living abroad.
Human Rights Watch and Reporters Without Borders, along with other groups, have called the government's move a flagrant effort to silence criticism.
And just last week the U.S.Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed a resolution condemning the Venezuelan government's action. It was sponsored by Sen.Richard Lugar,R.-Ind.,and had bipartisan support, including from Democratic Sen.'s Hillary Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois.
Actress Alicia Plaza spent 28 years working at RCTV _ appearing on a variety of soap operas _ before relocating to South Florida in 2005.
Plaza, who now lives in Doral, also shed tears in recent days over the closure. She compared it losing a family member.
"I can't believe this is happening," Plaza said."Everybody is in shock."
