Architectural desigh has always been a specialty of Jacques Garcia’s.During his student days——when he wasn’t busy demolishing Maria de Beyrie’s plasterwork——he conscientiously studied all the secrets of perspective and the vanishing point at the French Ecole des Metiers d’Art.This worthy establishment,housed in the old Hotel Sate,offered courses that were serious,but not as comprehensive as those given at the Cours Penninghen.The youthful student,who had more ideas than he did money,used his spare time to turn a profit from his artistic gifts.He picked up nacreous disks at the flea market,painted stylized Gay Nineties beauties on them,mounted them as earrings,and marketed them to the eager customers of vaguely hippie boutiques in Saint-Germain-des-Pres and Saint Tropez.The line was received enthusiastically and soon became so profitable that Garcia the spare-time supplier was forced to hire extra workers!A friend’s mother,scenting a good deal,offered to come in with him.But alas this good fairy turned out to be a wicked fairy in disguise.Blinded by greed,she underestimated the potential of her young acolyte,and killed the goose that was laying the golden eggs.
