It is artificial to separate the areas of under-representation within higher education, as people will ‘belong’ to one or more of these areas. After all, being from an ethnic minority does not preclude lower socio-economic class.
However, there are issues that affect each of these areas specifically and in the context of the difficulties faced in delivering our programmes of study it is worth thinking about where the roots of some of these issues lie. There has been, over recent years, an increase in participation in higher education, although the gap in participation between affluent and disadvantaged people has remained.
One of the main reasons for this according to Forsyth and Furlong is because young people from disadvantaged groups are not encouraged to ‘aspire’ to higher education.
The Art, Design and Communication sector has responded to this need with collaborative projects that include schools, further education colleges and with industry.
