桥,是一种特殊的建筑物,是经过放大的一条板凳.它使得车辆能够快速而方便的穿越河流、峡谷、公路和铁路等障碍物,已成为国家交通运输系统的一个重要组成部分.桥,是一种特殊的建筑物,是经过放大的一条板凳.它使得车辆能够快速而方便的穿越河流、峡谷、公路和铁路等障碍物,已成为国家交通运输系统的一个重要组成部分.跨河的桥使人们不用乘船过河,也无需绕道而行；跨越峡谷的桥使人们不用在陡峭的山坡上兴建公路；跨越公路和铁路的桥使车辆和火车不必停下来,让其他车辆通过.
建桥最主要的目的,就是为了解决跨水或者越谷的交通,以便于运输工具或行人在桥上畅通无阻.若从其最早或者最主要的功用来说,桥应该是专指跨水行空的道路.故说文解字段玉裁的注释为：“梁之字,用木跨水,今之桥也.”说明桥的最初含意是指架木于水面上的通道,以后方有引伸为架于悬崖峭壁上的“栈道”和架于楼阁宫殿间的“飞阁”等天桥形式.
