没错,虚拟语气是体现在第二个空．因此,在这一点上A,B都没错．那么再回头看第一个空：这里有一句关于宾语从句的概念需要掌握,就是：在含有宾语从句的复合句中,如果主句的谓语动词是一般现在时,从句的谓语动词可以根据从句的时间任意选择时态；但是,如果主句的谓语动词是一般过去式,从句的谓语动词只能用过去的某种形式．那么看一下,如果用didn't ,那只能表示在过去发生了那件事；但是,如果用hadn't stolen（过去完成时）则表示这个动作发生在主句的谓语动词之前,也就是,我们常说的”过去的过去”．因此,用过去完成时才正确!

过去完成时hadn't stolen表示过去发生的事对现在产生影响heshould be set free at once。
didn't steal只是对事实的陈述。
