Good morning,everyone!The topic of my presentation today is The Sense of Smell.As we all know,our nose has two major functions.One is to act as an interface to allow our body to exchange air with the external world,and the other one is to smell odors.How much do you know about our sense of smell?
Human sense of smell can detect thousands of scents.It enables us to distinguish what is fragrant from what is stink.It also allows us to detect something that is harmful to us.There are some other aspects that you may not know.Our sense of smell is not only related to smell,but also related to taste.When you eat,only four tastes which are sweet,sour,bitter and salt are detected by you tongue,and all the other tastes are detected by your nose.So,having a good sense of smell can increase you appetite.We tend to eat something that has a pleasant smell,even when we are not hungry.The sense of smell can also influence your emotion.For example,the smell of fresh bread drives some people angry,while the smell of lemon gives them a clear mind and high concentration levels.What’s more,our sense of smell plays an important role in love.
We all have the bad feelings when catching a cold,so it is not difficult for us to imagine what will happen if a person loses his sense of smell.He could not distinguish an ice cream and a pile of shit without a taste.He does not know he is surrounded by poisonous gas that threatens his life.Without the sense of smell,his sense of taste is so limited that almost all foods taste the same.He can not get the scents of flowers,or the scents of autumn leaves,or the scents of fruits,or the scents of someone’s skin,and so on.The whole world is tedious.That’s really terrible!
If your sense of smell is not sensitive,you can try to improve it.Here are some methods.
The most important method is to avoid substances that can impair your sense of smell,such as smokes,alcohol and some medicines.You should also keep away from foods that make your nose uncomfortable,such as milk,cheese,and ice cream.A person’s sense of smell becomes sharper after exercise,so this method can also be adopted.Moreover,your sense of smell can be improved if you increase the moisture in your nose,so you can put your nose on the top of a cup of hot water for some time every day.Finally,training is the factor most likely to enhance performance on smell.Take short,shallow sniffs instead of long ones to identify a smell,just like cats and dogs do.
